Clinton Eats New Zealand Icon

9/16/1999

President Clinton wore the New Zealand silver fern on Monday, and that night ate another New Zealand icon — Cervena venison.

At a private dinner at Five City Road Restaurant in Auckland, President Clinton ordered Grilled Cervena Rack with foie gras risotto and truffle oil for his main course, said restaurant co-owner Nicole McPhail. He told her it was a "wonderful experience". The dish was accompanied by a Church Road Cabernet Sauvignon.

American Ambassador Josiah Beeman hosted the President with (among others) Sir Edmund and Lady Hillary, the Maori Queen, Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu and Dame Malvina Major. Ambassador Beeman recommended the Cervena as a high quality, unique New Zealand food.

Cervena is the name for premium New Zealand venison in the USA market, where it has achieved an excellent reputation among top American chefs. Only qualifying New Zealand venison can use the Cervena appellation. It was also served at the APEC Leaders' dinner, which showcased top New Zealand foods and beverages.

Ms McPhail said the restaurant only discovered the identity of the guests shortly before they arrived. Chef Dietmar Sawyere and the staff were honoured to serve such prestigious guests, and delighted when President Clinton complimented them on the meal and "whole dining experience".
