NZDFA Next Generation Conference, South Canterbury

CURRENT CONCEPT PROGRAMME 

The 2019 Next Generation conference will feature on farm workshops, discussions on two feature farms in South Canterbury and a relaxed evening and entertainment spent in Twizel. (Accommodation McKenzie Country Lodge Hotel or the High Country Lodge at Twizel.)

It’s planned to pick up delegates arriving in Christchurch by air, 8:30am latest (see table of flight times below) and drive a bus or minivan convoy to McKenzie Basin and Haldon Station, or to buddy up with any Next Generation Cantabrians travelling from near CHCH. Flights direct to Timaru from North Island arrive at 11:30am and leave either at 6:45 am or 11:55am.

Brunch stop: Farm Barn Cafe Fairlie (owner Ellie Morgan) and/or the famous Fairlie Pie Shop (Farm Barn also stocks famous Fairlie pies) 

DRAFT PROGRAMME DAY 1, 21ST AUGUST (COMMENCING AT 12:30PM)  

Mackenzie Basin Haldon Station Farm tour and associated workshops, hosted by Paddy Boyd. Subjects covered include: (Time constraints may apply and final agenda is being clarified at present)

  • Haldon Station: Station tour. Background and history (Paddy Boyd) 
  • Relevance of deer in a balanced mixed livestock environment. “How Haldon Station works” 
  • New developments. Irrigation investment
  • Haldon Station Genetics. (The Deer Progeny test, Jamie Ward and Dr Geoff Asher TBC), DEERSelect, Sharon McIntryre 
  • Haldon’s Environmental management programme and FEP’s. Future proofing your business
  • Workshop Feature. Understanding and investing in farm business opportunities (Facilitated by Andy Macfarlane, Macfarlane Rural business TBC). Pathways to farm ownership/equity partnerships. What are the costs involved? 
  • Succession planning workshop? Follow up with Tony Hammington Peer Review (Final part of the MPII sustainable farming fund programme or run as a breakfast workshop Twizel, on day 2  
  • Background material supplied. From the P2P “The Tambo reports” (developing a deer breeding finishing business and costs of development and development costs returns for a velvet operation) 
  • Summary 

Evening Day 1, Travel to Twizel (1hour) to overnight accommodation (Mackenzie Country Lodge and the High Country Lodge)

Buffet Meal and Quiz night at Mackenzie Country Lodge (Hosted By the NZDFA and DINZ “The Next Generation Programme")

ACCOMMODATION

McKenzie Country Lodge - Share twin for $185 per room inclusive of breakfast for 2 people(25 rooms available and reserved until 21/7/19) All rooms have 2 queen beds. Booking code is DINZ01, people will need to provide credit card details over the phone when making the booking.

High Country Lodge - 1 bedroom motel, sleeps up to three $125.00 with $25 for a third person (10 rooms available and reserved until 14/08/19). Breakfast is $14.50 per person

DAY 2 “THE KOWHAIS” TOM MACFARLANE AND TIM TURNER, MANAGER

Travel from Twizel at 8:00am for arrival at 10:00am - 2:30pm 

  • Farm Tour. The Kowhais featuring winter feeding programmes, Fodder beet management and Direct drill establishment, pasture management role of red clovers and other high performance crops for deer growth  
  • Workshops: Weaner growth. Feeding for optimal production
  • Application of animal health plans for young stock 
  • Deer Select Genetics workshop on site Melior Genetics
  • Sharon McIntyre Deer Select: Setting and achieving breeding objectives 
  • Role of Breeding values in sire stag selection 

2:30pm convoy or buses leave for Christchurch 

And just in case the weather is unkind, a back up plan is suggested that would involve activity around a visit to the Alliance Group’s Smithfield deer slaughter plant and NZ Light Leathers as well as The Kowhais and or properties in the Timaru Geraldine area. Accommodation would be found in Timaru TBC.
