The best people to take photos of deer are farmers themselves. Deer are not spooked by a camera when they know the person behind the lens.

This was shown by the deer images captured by the winner and place-getters in the 2018 MSD Animal Health Deer Industry Photographic Competition, which attracted a record 59 photos from 20 entrants.

The winner, with a cash prize of $500 was Mark Tapley with “Misty stags”. The judges – Sam Higgins from MSD, professional photographer Lindsay Keats, Deer Industry News editor Phil Stewart, and Tony Pearse and Cenwynn Philip of DINZ – described this as a powerful, positive image. Tapley was also voted the People’s Choice Award at the 2018 conference.

Second was Pauline Pattullo with “Almost two of a kind”. This shot ticks a lot of boxes – two healthy stags on nice pasture and very well composed – definitely showing the industry in a good light. Third was Nic Bishop with “Just weaned”. “This is a nice study of a mob of weaners contemplating their next life stage and wondering where the hell mum got to,” said the judges.
