Velvet season fast approaching | Issue 170

Sep 3, 2021

Everyone knows that the annual seasonal velvet growth is unstoppable and even Covid-19 can’t prevent those buttons from dropping. With the velvet season fast approaching, it is important to make sure that you’ve tidied up from the previous season and are ready to go. A few reminders below, to help jog your memory:

  • Get any outstanding actions from your RCS audit completed now. Tags can’t be allocated to properties that haven’t been signed off as RCS compliant and if you don’t get it done soon, you’ll have to pay for another audit at your own expense.
  • Make sure your drug record book has been reconciled by your vet and that all of your other NVSB requirements have been completed. Again, tags can’t be allocated to properties that have not met the requirements of the NVSB programme, so don’t delay… act today!
  • Keep your deer shed clean and tidy at all times. We don’t have the power to stop MPI auditors from visiting your farm and if they do pay you a visit at short notice, then they’ll be looking at all aspects of farm compliance, including Overseas Market Access Requirements (OMAR), drug handling and storage, NVSB (under the Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations 2018), and general animal welfare.
